Candidate Story
George Wehner
UPP Mobilisation Officer Β· By-Election Veteran
George Wehner is the UPP's most tested candidate in the most recently contested seat. When independent MP Asot Michael - one of the most colourful and consequential figures in Antiguan political history - was murdered in November 2024, the country was plunged into a by-election with short notice and raw emotion. The UPP needed a candidate who could mobilise quickly, hold their ground, and demonstrate the party's continued relevance in the eastern parishes. Political Leader Pringle chose George Wehner.
As the party's Mobilisation Officer, Wehner has been the operational engine behind UPP ground campaigns for years - a role that demands knowledge of every constituency, relationship with branch-level activists, and an ability to convert enthusiasm into voter turnout. He contested St. George for the UPP in 2018 before his role evolved into party-wide campaign coordination.
In the January 2025 by-election in St. Peter, Wehner ran against the ABLP's Rawdon Turner. Though the ABLP held the seat, Wehner's willingness to contest on short notice and his strong campaign - centred on decades of infrastructure neglect and his community ties - demonstrated the character Pringle described when naming him: loyal, relentless, and principled. His general election campaign will build on that foundation, targeting voters who feel let down by a Labour representative who has yet to deliver.
