Candidate Story
Harold Lovell
Former Finance Minister Β· Returning Candidate
Harold Lovell is the most experienced statesman on the UPP's slate. Born in 1955 in St. John's, Lovell attended the Antigua Grammar School before earning a degree at the University of the West Indies, then a Barrister-at-Law qualification from Thames Valley University and Middle Temple, followed by a Masters of Jurisprudence from the University of Birmingham. His professional history spans education, law, trade unionism, and high-level government service.
During the UPP's decade in government (2004-2014), Lovell served as Foreign Minister, Minister of Tourism, and then - in his most consequential role - Minister of Finance and the Economy, in which he steered the country through the global financial crisis. He led the UPP as Political Leader until his retirement following the 2023 elections, having rebuilt the party from its lowest point to a competitive opposition force.
His return to active politics - contesting All Saints West rather than his previous City East seat - is a considered strategic move. He has described large constituencies as more conducive to community-level politics and harder for the Labour Party's machine operations to dominate. With the incumbent All Saints West seat having changed hands after the departure of Anthony Smith Jr to the ABLP, Lovell enters as the challenger, motivated by what he describes as a desire to help steer Antigua away from recklessness in its Social Security management and restore principled governance.
