Kelvin "Shugy" Simon

Member of Parliament Β· Community Leader

Kelvin "Shugy" Simon has lived one of the most dramatic political stories in recent Antiguan history - and emerged stronger at every turn. Elected to Parliament in the January 2023 general elections by a 199-vote margin, he immediately faced an ABLP-backed election petition seeking to disqualify him on the grounds he had been a public servant at nomination. Rather than allow a court process to drag on and paralyse his representation, Simon took a bold and unprecedented gamble: he resigned his seat in June 2023, forcing a by-election and putting the decision back in the hands of his constituents. The people of St. Mary's South vindicated him decisively - Simon won the October 2023 by-election in a rematch that now featured a Labour defector from his own camp as his opponent, adding a layer of personal betrayal to an already high-stakes contest. He won regardless. He has now been elected to the same seat three times within a single year. A guidance counsellor for 15 years across several of Antigua's schools, a certified personal trainer, and a national basketball player, Simon combines genuine community connection with the kind of tested political toughness that most first-term MPs never acquire. His ongoing work in St. Mary's South - from back-to-school distributions to coastal conservation projects - reflects a representative who has not stopped working since the day he was sworn in.
